The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), believes that education has a considerable impact on the expertise and competencies of the nurses. Nurses with BSN degrees are well-prepared to meet the demands of the patient’s health conditions. BSN nurses are valued for their skills in critical thinking, leadership, case management, and health promotion, and for their ability to practice across a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings (The Impact of Education on Nursing Practice 2019).Competencies of The Nurses With BSN Degrees Essay

Nursing is a health profession with multiple pathways to entry-level practice. Health scientists affiliated with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) confirms that pathways that lead to a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) and higher may improve patient outcomes. According to Linda Aiken, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, director of the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, hospitals with a larger number of BSN prepared nurses to have lower patient mortality rates. She also found out that 7 percent of decreased patient death was associated in hospitals with a 10 percent increase in bachelor’s degree nurses (Building the Case for More Highly Educated Nurses 2014). There are also decreased readmissions, shorter stays, and less postoperative complications such as infection to the incision line or catheter.Competencies of The Nurses With BSN Degrees Essay

Based on my life experiences, I agree that higher education such as BSN or above would be more beneficial for better patient care and patient outcome. The efficiency of a nurse depends on the person as well as the nursing education they received. I studied in a School of Nursing, which was affiliated with a Government Medical College. After a month’s preparation course, we had put on contact with patients, until our graduation. Nurses with an Associate degree are considered skilled nurses and have more hands-on experiences as bedside nurses. We were more dependent on doctors and we used to go according to the orders of the doctors. However, BSN prepared nurses to have more knowledge on planning, educating, and managing patient care. After starting my BSN program with GCU, I understood that BSN Degree is very helpful for critical thinking, assessment, and planning of better patient care. As my BSN courses went on, I am now more encouraged to pursue higher education after my BSN Degree.Competencies of The Nurses With BSN Degrees Essay

Differences in Competencies: Who Makes a Better Nurse? Michelle Phoebe Baltazar Grand Canyon University: NRS-430 July 18, 2012 Abstract In this essay the differences between an Associate prepared nurse versus Bachelor prepared nurse is discussed in correlation to critical thinking, professionalism, and leadership. Differences in Competencies: Who Makes a Better Nurse? Who makes a better nurse? A nurse with an Associate’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree? The answer would probably depend on who one asks. However, according to American Association of College of Nursing (2012), “education enhances both clinical competency and care delivery” (pg.1). In this discussion, nurses prepared in baccalaureate-degree level compared to…show more content…
“Autonomous nursing practice as defined as full command of expert knowledge and allowing for accountability and authority in decision making” (Creasia & Friberg, 2011, pg. 47). A doctor will more likely see a nurse as a professional once they show competence and autonomy, which in turn, will provide a positive nurse-physician relationship due to the trust built between professionals. A physician must be able to trust a nurse’s judgment and assessment skills to be able to provide a collaborative care for the patient. The wheel of professionalism is designed to compare nurses’ professional behavior with other professions, which places university-based education as central to professionalism, which then leads to a strong code of ethics, professional recognition and continuing education to maintain nursing competence (Yam, 2004). As a nurse achieves a status of professionalism, a nurse will view oneself as an equal partner in the health care team, which in turn will boost confidence and support for a more proactive and confident nurse Competencies of The Nurses With BSN Degrees Essay

Difference in Competencies of Nurses Prepared by Associate degree vs. Baccalaureate degree Grand Canyon University November 14, 2014 A “nurse is a nurse” right? Wrong! Nurses are prepared at different levels. Each level offers its own advantage that can be taken into the nursing career to serve patients and create individualized care to ensure the best outcomes. However, each degree does not prepare future nurses in the same way. A Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing or BSN is a four to five year degree that prepares graduates to pass the NCLEX examination and become a Registered Nurse. In the 1950’s baccalaureate nursing programs were made accessible to high school graduates throughout the country. Competencies of The Nurses With BSN Degrees Essay
Currently ADN programs prepare the most nurses for entry into the profession. (Creasia, 2007). The ADN program has many of the classes that the BSN program however, the BSN level classes are more in-depth and delve more into nurse management and community influence. This in-depth view into the nursing field helps to develop the nurse into a professional capable of understanding spiritual, social, and cultural situations that can have an effect when providing each patient individualized care. A study published in 2014 by Olga Yakusheva a researcher from the University of Michigan stated the fact that with only a 10% increase in ratio of BSN prepared nurses there was 10.9% lower chance of patient mortality on hospital units. The same study stated that if the number of BSN care providers was increased to 80% it would have an effect that would significantly lower length of stay and rate of readmission.Competencies of The Nurses With BSN Degrees Essay

A Discussion of Differences in Competencies Between BSN and ADN Prepared Nurses
Grand Canyon University: NRS-430V August 10, 2012

A Discussion of Differences in Competencies Between BSN and ADN Prepared Nurses There are currently several choices for education to become an RN. The most common are the associate degree in nursing, and the baccalaureate degree in nursing. The associate degree in nursing is more technical based and prepares nurses for working in a secondary care setting. The associate degree in nursing devotes more time to clinical experience, and less time to theory, research, and evidenced based practice. The associate degree nurse can receive limited education in leadership and public health, but it is not as in depth as the baccalaureate degree nurse receives. The baccalaureate degree in nursing is more comprehensive. It includes topics such as; evidenced based clinical practice, nursing theory, leadership, critical thinking, public health, statistics, community health, and helps the nurse prepare for graduate study. The topics are studied in more depth in the baccalaureate nursing program. The baccalaureate degree nursing program may spend weeks on one topic, and have weeks of clinical experience in the same topic.Competencies of The Nurses With BSN Degrees Essay  The associate degree nursing program may only have days devoted to the same topic, and one or two days of clinical experience in that topic. The baccalaureate degree in nursing prepares the new nurse for any type of registered nurse position, and is a well rounded education. The baccalaureate degree in nursing also provides the nurse with a good foundation for a leadership role. (nursingworld.org 2012) Friberg, Creasia and (2011) state “the legal scope of practice for associate degree-prepared and baccalaureate-prepared nurses is undifferentiated because both groups are awarded the same license. This limits differentiated roles in work settings and hinders the reward system for leadership responsibilities” (Friberg, Creasia and, 2011, p. 16). Some papers recommend that one license is granted for baccalaureate-prepared nurses and masters-prepared nurses, and a different license granted for associate-prepared nurses and licensed practical nurses. Several articles demonstrate the benefits to having a baccalaureate-prepared nurse. Long, Bernier and (2004) state that “a 10% increase in the proportion of nurses holding a bachelor’s degree was associated with a 5% decrease in both the likelihood of patients dying within 30 days of admission and the odds of failure to rescue” (Long, Bernier and, 2004, p. 49). Dilles, Stichele (2010) showed that “bachelor’s degree holders were 35% more likely than diploma holders to have observed an adverse drug reaction” (Dilles, Stichele, 2010, p. 1072). They also said that bachelor’s degree nurses were more likely to be involved in continuing education and had a higher level of confidence in their own knowledge.
In my experience as a supervisor, I have noticed that bachelor’s degree nurses are more involved in the development of evidence based practice through committees. They also participate more in the development of new policies and procedures by participating in peer review. I have also noticed that bachelor’s degree nurses are more involved in the unit based council and assisting with projects to enhance staff education. They also lead our unit based council, and are involved in projects for the nurse practice council. They are also more involved in quality audits and developing pathways to improve safety. In our new graduate population, many of the new baccalaureate nurses are role models in many ways, even though they lack experience. The enthusiasm of the new graduate nurses with baccalaureate preparation is wonderful to see. They graduate and are ready to take on anything they can think of, and they come up with many great projects. Competencies of The Nurses With BSN Degrees Essay

Competencies between BSN & ADN
RN Stands for the registered Nurse, and BSN stands for Bachelor of science in Nursing. I graduated in India (RN) in 1999. After my graduation I realized I wanted to do BSN because of more scope. I came United State and I saw a big Difference between RN and BSN. After BSN to many options open for us. Like a good scope for education and management and we get master degree and can apply for master’s- or doctoral-level programs. Associate Degree are 2-year programs and BSN is 4-years programs. If you have an RN license, then it becomes only 2-year. And BSN program price more to comprehensive than the ADN program. So only BSN can go with management, charge and supervise the area. The ADN, which was founded by Mildred Montag due to severe shortage of nurses was considered to fix practical bedside nurses for secondary care settings such as community hospital and long term health care facilities. BSN nurses are more likely to establish professional performance important to the patient safety, such as problem solving and presentation of multipart functions. Many hospitals require all new hires at least, BSN as well as those woes is staffing the floors and helping in access level position. RN is able to get level 1 job in nursing home rather than a hospital. In specific are the hospital needs high skilled nursing management. Like in ICU, Med surge and other area hospital required, BSN rather than AND. The ADN and BSN nurses can do the same work with the sick patient to promote their health. But the BSN can judgement, management, research and nursing. I am working in rehabilitation hospital as a RN. I learnt and motivate from my BSN nurses. They have a more confidence to do the work. They care conversation with DR about the patient medication and the condition. Competencies of The Nurses With BSN Degrees Essay

So BSN comparatively more power to the AND. Some places RN work with 28 patients or more. But the BSN can only work with the 5 patients or management. This is a big difference between RN and BSN. In my experienced I did work with 28 patients that was too hard for me and any nurses. BSN can choose easily future step what she wants to do it. And RN can’t do anything in future before BSN. In the August 2014 International Journal of Nursing Studies discovered that by increasing Baccalaureate prepared nurses in Korea and the university of Pennsylvania by 10%, it decreased the patient death rate by 9%. And the other difference between BSN and ADN, BSN has better job opportunities, high incomes and career progression Competencies of The Nurses With BSN Degrees Essay

Differences in Competencies between ADN and BSN

Over the past few decades, many drastic changes occurred in U.S health care delivery. Our current healthcare trends demand nurses to take more active role in the health care decisions in hospital setting, long term care setting and in community healthcare setting. Since “nursing is based upon a body of knowledge that is always changing with new discoveries and innovation” Potter and Perry (2005), nursing profession is compelled to grow from being just a traditional bedside nurse. IOM’s future of nursing report which is released in 2010 calls nurses to be “more highly educated, diverse nursing workforce”. There are two educational routes for becoming a professional registered nurse in U.S. One of the educational routes is be Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and another one is obtaining Bachelors in Nursing (BSN) or Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Although, both degrees enable nurses to get licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse, there are differences among Associate level prepared nurses and Baccalaureate level prepared nurses. In order to meet the requirements and demands of our changing health care system, nurses have to be least Baccalaureate level prepared. First of all, Associate degree program is a two year program that is usually offered by community college or junior college. Upon graduation, ADN student’s earn70 credits. The BSN program is usually four year of study in a college or university with at least 120 credits upon completion of the degree.Competencies of The Nurses With BSN Degrees Essay While both ADN and BSN degree, teach nursing students the basic nursing curriculum such as anatomy, physiology, nutrition, behavioral sciences, medical surgical nursing, maternity, psychiatry, pediatrics and community health etc. “Bachelor’s degree in Nursing offers more classes that focus on evidence-based clinical practices and leadership” Moore(2009). Additional coursework included in BSN degree are in research, statistics, critical thinking and emphasize on public health/community health. The additional classes a BSN have to take are very significant because it broaden nurse’s knowledge and broaden their scope and enable them to become well ground nurse who treat their patient as a whole person and not just the disease or diagnosis. While there is no skill and competency differences among Associate degree prepared nurse and Baccalaureate level prepared nurse, the BSN degree nurses have more critical thinking skills that equip them for evidence based practice in clinical setting.Competencies of The Nurses With BSN Degrees Essay

The article by Moore (2009) states that “Students entering associate degree nursing programs are focused on learning the technical aspects of nursing appropriate to providing direct care to patients and families, mostly in acute care settings.” Client care requires more than just application of scientific knowledge. It requires the nurse to apply critical thinking and clinical decision making effectively. Bachelor’s prepared nurses use critical thinking effectively than Associate prepared Nurse since the BSN curriculum emphasize the need for critical thinking. The first component of critical thinking is a nurse’s specific knowledge base. This varies according to a nurse’s educational experience. “Numerous research studies have demonstrated that the ADN and BSN nurses are not different in skill competency when they graduate, but within a year, the BSN nurses show greater critical thinking skills, better problem solving, and the development of clinical judgment”. Moore (2009). Nurse’s broad knowledge base gives the nurse a more holistic view of clients and their health care needs. The depth and extend of knowledge influence the nurse’s ability to think critically about nursing problems. Nurses are responsible for making accurate and appropriate clinical decisions.Competencies of The Nurses With BSN Degrees Essay

As a Bachelor’s prepared nurse enters the health care system since he/ she is trained in school they are able to use the critical thinking skill and problem solving better than Associate prepared nurse. Bachelor’s prepared nurses are better equipped to make clinical decision more effectively and efficiently. Nurses have to make clinical decisions all the time to improve a client’s health and to maintain wellness. For example, it is the nurse who usually takes immediate action when a client’s clinical condition deteriorates, who decides if a client is experiencing complications that warrant notification of the physician. A nurse must be able to think critically, solve problems and find the best solution for client’s need to assist clients in maintaining or improving their health. For instance, if an elderly patient status post hip replacement, bed-bound complains of pain in the affected leg and swelling, an ADN prepared nurse might carry out the order for pain management and will elevate the leg to subside swelling. On the other hand, a baccalaureate prepared nurse will critically think about the potential complication status post hip replacement surgery and will take the clinical manifestation of swelling of the leg might be secondary to DVT and will notify the Medical Provider immediately in order to prevent complication. “Research has shown that lower mortality rates, fewer medication errors, and positive outcomes are all linked to nurses prepared at the baccalaureate and graduate degree levels” Rosseter (2012) Nursing must reflects the needs and values of society through implementing the standards of professional performance and the standards of care.Competencies of The Nurses With BSN Degrees Essay
