Personal Leadership Philosophies Paper

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

What is your leadership philosophy? In this Assignment, you will explore what guides your own leadership.

To Prepare:

  • Identify two to three scholarly resources, in addition to this Module’s readings, that evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments.
  • Reflect on the leadership behaviors presented in the three resources that you selected for review.
  • Reflect on your results of the CliftonStrengths Assessment, and consider how the results relate to your leadership traits.

The Assignment (2-3 pages):

Personal Leadership Philosophies

Develop and submit a personal leadership philosophy that reflects what you think are characteristics of a good leader. Use the scholarly resources on leadership you selected to support your philosophy statement. Your personal leadership philosophy should include the following:

  • A description of your core values
  • A personal mission/vision statement
  • An analysis of your CliftonStrengths Assessment summarizing the results of your profile
  • A description of two key behaviors that you wish to strengthen
  • A development plan that explains how you plan to improve upon the two key behaviors you selected and an explanation of how you plan to achieve your personal vision. Be specific and provide examples.
  • Be sure to incorporate your colleagues’ feedback on your CliftonStrengths Assessment from this Module’s Discussion 2.

Woo- Love meeting new people and winning them over. What makes them stand out is their strength, they tell jokes and act out funny stories to involve newcomers as well as outsiders in discussions. This makes strangers feel welcome and inspires conversations (Gallup, 2019).

Futuristic- They influence people by their vision of the future. What makes them stand out is that people rely on them due to vivid mental images of the future. Many people lack the ability to envision what will be possible in the coming in the future (Gallup, 2019).

This assessment truly describes me my two core values are

Being strategic and connectedness- I chose the two as my core values because, as a strategic leader I am both firm and flexible I am persistence during setbacks and able to react strategically to any changes (Paul, Steve, & Samantha, 2013). Connectedness is a support to lifestyle and health. Research shows that feeling connected can help maintain a healthy body mass index, control blood sugars, improve cancer survival, decrease cardiovascular mortality, decrease depressive symptoms, mitigate posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, and improve overall mental health. Counseling patients on increasing connectedness or prescribing connectedness are ways that lifestyle medicine specialists can use to help patients to add not only years to their life but also health and well-being to those years (Martino, Pegg & Frates, 2015). Nursing Leadership

While raising two adolescent girls, this author is working on her Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner degree (PMHNP).

Psychiatric disorders within these professions are multifaceted and rising at an alarming rate. My most recent project is hosting a website for my non-profit organization, sharing my research and fundraising for mental health therapy for local MP and FRs; my efforts supported by their respective employers. During personal interactions, many have expressed to me that for psychological symptoms, they are directed to contact their respective employee assistance program (EAP). Unfortunately, combined with the already perceived stigma of seeking help, the true reluctance was the absence of an EAP clinician with first-hand experience in these unique occupations. These concerns significantly limit the number of “relatable” practitioners therefore, as a trusted partner, incorporating over 20 years of experience with MP and FRs, I will change this for all of us.

    Core Values

Prior to this course, this author always felt that through life, open-mindedness, perseverance, compassion, education, and innovation, were her core values. Remaining open-minded about different individuals or situations has afforded this author the gift of seeing people and things from a different perspective than her own. The ability to persevere despite challenges from nearly every ACE factor and still maintain compassion for others is a core value that this author has been able to maintain through life and currently teach to her children. Education and innovation have been the foundation of this perseverance in finding not only why people think the way they do but also how to help good people out of bad situations. When this author engaged in the Gallop survey presented, the results were very similar with strengths a relator, learner, maintaining responsibility, a developer and maintaining focus. Personal Vision

As a highly regarded partner in their profession, I envision reaching every civil service and medical professional in Florida, suffering from exposure to trauma. Within ten years, this author envisions improving overall public safety by reducing uncontrolled psychiatric disorders, helping to maintain compliance, and eliminating preventable suicide among active and retired FRs and MPs.

    Achievement Plan

This author anticipates attending monthly meetings with local agencies and healthcare teams across the Tampa Bay Area, contributing time to local volunteer opportunities and becoming more involved in local and state political campaigns. This nurse also anticipates developing and teaching courses in psychiatry, mental health, peer assessment and self-care after graduation. This nurse will exemplify, particularly for her daughters, success as a female business owner of a facility that specializes in the needs of a FR or MP. I will dedicate myself to assisting that community with the management of mental, emotional, and physical disorders. I will continue to promote and utilize high quality, peer-reviewed research, and evidence-based practice as well as successfully maintain all relevant qualifications. My dedication will continue to expand through a nationwide telepsychiatry program specifically designed for all active and retired personnel in this unique profession.

    Supporting Sources

Benefiting from networking and resources, she obtained a student membership as quickly as possible to local professional organizations such as Tampa Bay Advance Practice Nursing Council, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Florida Nurses Association and a pending application with American Psychiatric Nurses Association. This author volunteers locally with Tampa Bay Regional Critical Incident Team and Hillsborough County Medical Reserve Corps while working to obtain legal rights for her own non-profit organization, “One Thin Line Family”.

Leaders need to create a vision to aim for with every aspect of their practice and behavioral foundation. Kouzes and Posner support the idea that followers feel their prime candidate is going to know what they are all working toward and expects them to lead the way on the road to that goal (Marshall & Broome, 2017).
