Leadership is not random. It is multifaceted and must be communicated as a stated plan to effect a change. Organizational leaders provide a vision and move others toward a common goal. This vision also reinforces the importance of teamwork in the workplace.

According to Buppert (2015), quality improvement and patient safety are inextricably intertwined. A work environment that supports teamwork and respect for other people is essential to promote patient safety and quality of care. Unprofessional behavior is disruptive and adversely impacts patient and staff satisfaction, the recruitment and retention of healthcare professionals, communication, teamwork and undermines a culture of safety. Unprofessional behavior is therefore unacceptable.

Discussion Question:

In this scenario, what evidence-based organizational strategies and management skills might you employ to resolve co-worker conflict? Reflect on conflict resolution strategies specifically for healthcare. How does teamwork increase patient safety? Provide evidence and rationales to support your decisions. Conflict can arise at any given time especially when individuals are in close quarters and work together daily. Negative workplaces yield dysfunctional team work, decreased patient and employee satisfaction and increased employee turnover (Overton & Lowry, 2014). Quick resolution and conflict management techniques can help improve all these areas of employment. There are five styles of conflict management, which include accommodating, compromising, collaborating, avoiding and completing. For the scenario given, I would choose to compromise and collaborate methods to solve the conflict. Whatever the differences are between the two employees, they both need to work together to solve their differences. First, this conversation needs to take place out of the ears of our patients. Secondly, the two employees need to discuss their differences and attempt to reach a compromise. A compromise is a process of bargaining that often results in a mutual solution that all parties can agree to (Passmore, 2018). This will allow the employees to decrease the tension toward each other and allow them to get back to their day to focus on the patients. Once the employees had time to cool down, they can then collaborate to find a solution to their problem. Allowing the employees to work out their problem helps them to work better as a team. Whenever the focus of the team deters from the patient, problems and mistakes occur. We are all human, which means we are not perfect. We can allow things from home or work to get in our heads and cause us to lose focus of our duties. Being able to work together without problems benefits the patient. We are like a functioning clock. If one gear is grinding with another gear, then the hands do not work properly. But when all gears work together properly, then the clock runs without issues. Working together as a team allows for a safer work environment for patients and employees. Everyone has one goal in mind, the patient, works with a clear head, resulting in less mistakes, and increased patient satisfaction and safety.
