Week 1 Discussion 1
How parenting change
Over the years, parenting styles have been changing from simple to complex. Comparing the parenting styles that were used in the past and the styles employed in the modern world, there is a big difference in the way the two styles differ. This has been so rapid in that technology and the means of fending for children has had a total impact on the way that parenting is conducted. One of the main influencing factors in the parenting style employed is the aspect of work relations. 25 years ago, most women used to be housewives. This gave them enough time to take care of their children at home, as husbands fended for their families. Therefore, children upbringing was done exclusively by women. Moreover, the codes of parenting depended on the child gender. Boys were given less priority as compared to girls. This is a total difference with today’s parenting styles. Women are also engaged in fending for families, some working late in their professions. Education also has an impact on the kind of parenting involved. As a result, most parenting is conducted by house helps, who are left to cater for the children during the day when parents are off to work. ECE 355 Understanding Behavior & Family Dynamics
From the article, kids are seen as an expense, and the mode of parenting has totally changed, from the communal parenting styles employed initially, to the mode of kids being left to cater for themselves in the current world. The main excuse by parents in the current era as compared to 25 years ago is the fact that economic hardships have settled in, thereby calling for both parents to indulge in workforce, therefore, reducing the time allocated for children upbringing and family catering. Modern technology has also changed the way children react and interact with their parents, since technology like televisions take most of their time off parents.

Grandparents
Summarize the information on your state’s fact sheet. I live in Texas, and the information I was able to receive is there are 862,624 children under the age 18 live in homes where the householders are grandparents or other relatives (12.6% of the children in the state.) (U.S. 2010 Census) o of these, 653,556 live with grandparents who are the householders (9.5% of the children in the state) and 209,068 live with other relatives who are the householders (3.1% of the children in the state). (U.S. 2010 Census.) 313, 499 children live in homes with grandparent householders where grandparents are responsible for them* o of these children, 100,399 have no parents present in the home. * The Grandparents* 289,530 grandparents are the householders and are responsible for their grandchildren living with them. Of these: o 36% of the grandparents are White and not Hispanic, 17% are Black/African American, 1% are Asian, and 45% are Hispanic/Latino, and may be of any race. o 34% have no parents of the children present in the home. o 71% are under age 60. o 23% live in poverty. ** 25,497 grandparents in Houston city, 18,488 grandparents in San Antonio city, and 13,665 grandparents in Dallas city are the householders and are responsible for their grandchildren living with them. Comparable data are not currently available for homes where other relatives are the householders. 100% of poverty level. Data not specifically cited are taken from the U.S. Census Bureau 2005-2009 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates, Detailed Table B09006 and Subject Tables S1001 and S1002. Sometimes state child welfare agencies place children in foster care with grandparents or other relatives. This is often called “kinship care.” Federal law requires states to notify all known relatives within 30 days of children’s removal from their parents. In 2010 in Texas: 26,686 children/youth spent some time in out-of-home care 6,767 of these children/youth were placed in certified relative/kinship care, 19,919 of these children/youth were placed in non-certified relative/kinship care Placement Policies Texas state law requires that kin be considered first when an out-of-home placement is sought for a child. There is no separate verification program for kinship foster parents and kin must meet the same licensing standards and receive the same foster care payment rate as non-kin. Subsidized Guardianship in Texas, the subsidized guardianship program is called the Permanency Care Assistance (PCA) program. The PCA program provides assistance to relatives and other designated caregivers who have served as verified foster parents for the child for six months and who have subsequently taken permanent managing conservatorship of the child. Kinship families are eligible for PCA if reunification and adoption are ruled out as permanency plan options, the child demonstrates a strong attachment to the kinship caregiver, older youth are consulted about the PCA plan, and the kinship family enters into a PCA Agreement with the Department of Family and Protective Services after negotiating the monthly assistance payment.
Explain the impact this type of situation may have on family relationships and the development of the child.
There is a big impact on both the children and grandparent, I have the pleasure of been one of the grandparents. Your life change and they life change I am the mother of three children after I raise my three I was asking to raise my niece and nephew. I couldn’t say no they were in an abuse situation, first my niece she was about six months old and later her brother. One impact was finance, at the time my husband and I was just living off very low income. We had to go to the system for food any money, I was the only one working and he was getting social security because he was sick. We struggle to provide for all five children, that mean that had to come up short on clothes, shoes and any type of personal things. For the holly days we all went to organization to get help for the kids for Christmas, and other events. As the children got older it was things that they couldn’t have or predicate in school because of finance, and they felt left out. Some years later after all the other ones was grown I had to do the same things with my grandchildren. I have had them since the young’s one were too, now she is eleven and the oldest one is sixteen. But we getting through it all, things are much better now and they are growing up and things are much easier. But I came a lone way. ECE 355 Understanding Behavior & Family Dynamics
Discuss your role in supporting families where the grandparents are raising their grandchildren.
I support the grandparents all the way in my situation I didn’t have any choice I rather see my grandchildren at home with me instead in the system and I went got them. I have no regrets, I can’t say at my age that I would do it all over again, but I know that God have bless me dearly and there is nothing I need that I don’t have now.

Week 2 Assignment Working with Family
Importance of building relationships with families
Good relationships promote healthy growth stages of the toddlers and infants into successful adults. Positive relationships contribute to a healthy positive parent-child relationship that helps the child in early learning and healthy development of the child. The child is able to set on a successful path in life by learning how to manage emotions, solve existing problems, adjust to new situations, solve conflicts and able to get along with papers and other adults in the society. Positive healthy relationships in a family help improve the financial situation of the family and improve health and safety of the child.
Research-based strategies that help to build relationships with families.
There are many strategies that are inbuilt to deal with the relationship handles that are facing the 21st century families. There strategies aim to improve family engagements. One of them is, have an adequate and welcoming space to engage families. This strategy helps to give a family a strong foundation. It ensures that the families draw closer to each other. This can be achieved through summer programs and community learning centers that help families feel more close to each other through setting up of ‘family corner’. Another strategy is to communicate and build trusting relationships. Enquiring about family members’ lives and interests shows concern and creates a sense of togetherness. Also, it ensures that there is general mutual respect among family members and a need to keep close and keep in each other’s lives. Also talking about more positive issues keeps a healthy relationship going (Little, 2006).
Another is helping to support families and their basic needs through providing access to community resources, hosting forums and discussion nights in order to address topics of concern to family members. These kind of initiatives help families to overcome challenges such transportation that may affect children participation. Community school partnerships can be
expanded in order to provide information to a community through community resources that help address various issues (Little, 2006).
Parenting styles which align with the strategies above.
Some of the parenting styles that can work well with the strategies named above include authoritative parenting. This is the type of parenting that involves the parent and the child having a discussion \. It is directed in a more rational and issue oriented way. There is a discussion about the ways the parent chooses to discipline the child and the reasons for it. There are expectations drawn, assigning of responsibilities to the child and explanation of the consequences that will follow once the child does not adhere to the laid down rules. The parent lays down the rules but doesn’t force the child too much and gives him/ her the space to be their own person. She/ he recognizes the child’s interests and thus sets standards that act as a guideline to the child’s development. There is a self-confidence displayed in the child and developed social skills. There is a use of power, reason and reinforcement to achieve objectives that both the child and the parent agreed on (Baumrind, 1967).
The authoritarian parenting styles would not work to promote positive healthy relationship with the parent and child as it encourages forceful measures to the child and there is no reasoning. The permissive parenting also doesn’t help as the parent is subject to the child’s every whim so there is no proper judgement of the situation.
Resources for each strategy that will help in the family relationship.
In communication and better establishment of trust in the family, it is important for the family to engage in family partnerships, this involves family and children program staff together with the children engaging in various tasks. These helps the children to develop and grow into people of character through earning in different environments and emulating the behavior of the grownups. The partnerships help the staff and parents achieve a common goal of understanding the child’s strength, challenges and interests. This can be assisted in summer after school programs that help the parents and the children to bond and understand each other (TNCP, 2016). ECE 355 Understanding Behavior & Family Dynamics
In having an adequate and welcoming space to engage families, understanding of their family lives and family cultures help in influencing building of certain types of relationships. Culture is a key role in helping the family grow through understanding of the history and the values that the culture stand for. Participation of cultural events help to promote these bonds as they make the families more aware of wo they are and they also help the child develop an attitude of who he or she is and what is expected of them. This helps in growth of the mind and helps the child to relate better with people in his/ her professional and personal life (TNCP, 2016).
Lastly, helping to support families and their basic needs through provisions of necessary services especially for the low income earning families and the community living below the poverty line, helps the family develop healthy relationships. Health services and education programs for the children and the rest of the family members ensure safety and health of family and children. Also engaging in community services help the family and the children to bond more and understand each other. This helps the family especially parents to be aware of developing characters in the children and thus help them develop into better more structured people so as to promote better growth, this in future will help the child to be able to fit in the society and help to relate better with other people in the society. It also helps the families to respect each other more and to learn each other (TNCP, 2016).

Week 3 discussion 2
Working with Diverse Family Structures Compare and contrast the family structures or dynamics shared in the two articles you read. Explain how you will utilize the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct to provide a foundation for working with the diverse family structures in the two articles you read. The two articles that I am going to be looking at in this question are “Children Living with Female Same-Sex Couples Have 40 Percent More Focused Time with Their Parents” https://childandfamilyblog.com/same-sex-couples-give-more-focused-time/ and “After Parents’ Divorce, Regular Overnight Stays with Dad Are Best for Youngest Children” https://childandfamilyblog.com/parents-divorce-regular-overnight-stays-dad-best-young-children/. The main difference noted in family structure for the two articles mentioned above is the family set up. For the first article, the family is made up of two parents who are of the same sex (Prickett, 2015). This means that both parents for a child belong to the same gender. For the second article, the family is made up of a two parents although living separately. This means that a child is mainly brought up by a single parent. The NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct can be utilized when working with diverse family structures to help in the setting of general principles that govern child development and child care. ECE 355 Understanding Behavior & Family Dynamics
Discuss at least two strategies that you will use to foster inclusion of all diverse family structures, so that all children will feel supported, regardless of their family configuration. Use one additional scholarly source to support your discussion.
The first strategy that can be used is the creation of an environment that is inclusive, and this can effectively be done by encouraging open communication and also encouraging accommodation. The second strategy that can be used is the encouragement of an open mindset. This helps to increase the level of accommodation. Reference: Prickett, K (2015). Week 3 Assignment
Defining Family
PowerPoint Assignment
Purpose statement
Parenting is a challenging task, and that is the main reason why different individuals may have different opinions as to what constitutes positive parenting. To get this right, one needs to focus on the outcomes of parenting skills, and this will give a clear picture of what positive parenting is all about. With that said, positive parenting involves parenting skills that result to the joy of the children and the parents as well. One is bound to face various challenges in life and as such talking of making life, a joy may seem like a far-fetched idea. However, what is important to notice is that positive parenting will see to it that a child can find a source of joy through the good as well as the bad times in life. The result is that such as a child will grow up with effective personal as well as social skills that will benefit their individual families and the society as a whole.
Defining family
There have been different definitions of a family as presented by different individuals based on the present and past time. Moreover, the United States Department of Justice does not have the definition of a family as a single statement but rather a combination of statements, and this is aimed at including all the possibilities of a family rather than focusing on one particular setting. In my opinion, I believe that a family refers to an integration of individuals who are related either by blood or marriage and they interact through communal living or relationships. This definition sees to it that I am in a better position to provide family-centered support because it does not only focus on individuals limited to living under one roof. As such, even those family members who geographically apart play a role in the upbringing of the family. What this means is that when is comes to family-centered support, it is imperative for every member of the family to take the initiative to work together with the family. This may be in various forms such as moral support, financial support and any other support that may be needed by any of the family members.
How parenting has changed
The world is constantly changing, and parenting is not an exception. Any individual who has born two or three decades ago would agree that the current parenting styles are totally different from the one they went through while growing up. One of the things that have greatly changed in parenting is that most mothers are no longer available at all times as it was the case in the past. In past, most mothers would stay at home and watch over the kids while the fathers were the main breadwinners, (Pickhardt & Iannelli, n.d.). This has however changed with women increasingly getting engaged in economic activities and as such, they leave home early and get back in the evening. What this means is that most of the responsibilities that were undertaken by the mothers are not being undertaken by nannies or baby care centers. The other thing is that the use of technology has also changed parenting in the current time. Back then children used to play outside with their friend while engaging in various physical activities. However, the in the current times, children are more engaged in using technological gadgets such as video games and mobile phones. This means that parents have to go an extra mile to ensure that their children are not subjected to inappropriate content while using these devices, (Pickhardt & Iannelli, n.d.). ECE 355 Understanding Behavior & Family Dynamics
Parenting styles
The first parenting style is the authoritarian parenting style. This is a style whereby the parents set the rules and the children as expected to follow these rules, failure to which the children are punished. In this style, the parent does not have to give reasons why they come up with the rule and why they should be followed. The children are also not allowed to question the rule or have an opinion about following them. Such children are good at following rules for fear of punishment but may not be able to act independently. The second style is the authoritarian parenting. In this style, just like the authoritative parenting, the parent makes all the rules that need to be followed by the children but with an exception. Here children are informed about the reasons behind the rules, and they may take into consideration the feelings of the children. These kinds of parent used consequences other than punishment, (Carlson, 2011). The third style is permissive parenting style, and these parents offer limited disciple to their children. They are lenient parents who only step up when there is a serious issue. These are the parents who think that kids are kids and as such, there may be little or no punishment for misbehavior. The last style is the uninvolving parenting, and this is one whereby the parents are neglectful. These parents do not meet the basic needs of their children, and they may also expect them to raise themselves. This may be a result of mental health issues or even lack of knowledge of parenting skills. As such, the children develop a low self-esteem as well as perform poorly academically, (Carlson, 2011).

Week 4 discussion 1
Balancing
Challenges faced by working families There are various problems which are faced by families where the parents are working. The family might find it hard to balance their jobs and their life. The parents might not find time for each other and also time for their children this is because the work life might be too demanding or even too stressful. The families will, therefore, experience challenging experiences in their relationships. The parents might have a strained relationship, and they may also fail to direct their children in the right manner. The lack of time between parents and their children is disastrous. Children need their parents or guardians to guide them and also to love them. Children at tender age need guidance and care mostly from parents. This is a major problem facing the working families. As a result of the strained relationships, the parents might also grow apart which might lead to divorce which will affect the children. Another problem faced by the working families is who to leave their children for. The people take care of the children might be careless which might lead to poor growth and development of the kids. All these problems affect these families, but the families can be able to handle these problems by sharing ideas and also by creating time for their families. Child’s behavior
These challenges can impact the behavior of a child in a big way. Children are very sensitive to their environment. When parents are not available at home in most times, the environment created at home is that of desperation. This may make children depressed and also they might not lead happy lives. Children need time with their parents so that they can be able to share and be corrected. The parent may also not notice the behavior of their child since they don’t spend time with them. This may lead the child to have bad behavior which is uncontrolled. The behavior of the child, therefore, depends also much on the availability of the parents to spend time with kids to correct, share and have fun. ECE 355 Understanding Behavior & Family Dynamics
Balance between family life and work
There are various strategies that families can apply to ensure that they have been able to balance their job life and also their family wellbeing. One of the strategies is to ensure that they create enough time for their families it’s to have fun and enjoy various social activities. Another strategy is to make sure that the parents have maintained constant and efficient communication with their children and also between the parents. This will help to discover the various challenges facing the parents. Another strategy is to ensure that the work life does not interfere with the family life (Drago, 2007). The parents should not work at home unless it is imperative. This will strengthen the relationships in the family. These strategies will help a family to ensure that there is a balance between the family life and the work life. The parents should also respond to their kids’ behavior which is reported and they should also track their performance in school. The family is vital, and when there is peace at home, the work life becomes smooth, and the kids can be brought up in the best manner. References

Week 5 Discussion 2
Childcare
Define quality childcare and provide a rationale for its importance. Quality childcare is where the child is provided with a safe and nurturing environment that promotes healthy growth and development in the children. It also develops positive emotional, physical and cognitive growth while at the same time develops the child’s personality. Childhood lays the foundation for future life. The child starts learning from the first day. It is, therefore, important that the child receives quality care that will build a solid base for their future (Benson & Haith, 2009).
Discuss the indicators of quality child care.
The ratio of childcare givers to the children is one of the signs of good child care. The ratio should be complementary to the number of children in the care facility and the development stage of the children. The child requires a varied amount of attention in each development stage. It is essential that they are given proper attention, to ensure healthy growth. For infants, a maximum ratio of 1:4 in a childcare center shows that the child receives quality childcare.
The learning environment is another indicator of quality childcare. The learning environment should be child-friendly, inviting and promote learning. The activities conducted should be geared at the acquisition of various skills by the children. The children should be happy and involved in the activities they undertake. The caregivers should be listening, talking and playing with the children. They should be actively interacting with the children (Schiller & Dyke, 2005).
Health and safety of the childcare institution is another indicator of quality childcare. The environment should be clean, tidy and baby proofed to prevent any injuries to the children. There should be adequate health and safety policies put in place which is strictly followed by the caregivers. There should be easy access to the pediatrician and proper diet for the toddlers.
Examine the cost of center-based child care in your state and share the cost listed by the children’s defense fund.
The cost of center-based childcare in Michigan is very expensive. As of 2013, the cost of center-based childcare for an infant in Michigan was $9,724 annually. This is 16.2% less than the in-state annual tuition and fees at a public four-year college (Children’s Defense Fund, 2015).
Evaluate the affordability of quality childcare in your area and determine if the cost is consistent with the provided service.
The cost is not affordable to low-income families. The state is ranked 34th in child poverty in the state. Only 46% of the children aged 3-4 years were enrolled in preschool from 2011-2013. The cost of the childcare services is very high. The childcare institutions provide quality childcare services that ensure that the child acquires the necessary skills to promote healthy growth and development. The state-funded preschool program met 8 out of the ten quality benchmarks according to the National Institute of Early Education Research of 2013-2014. The cost is consistent with the price. ECE 355 Understanding Behavior & Family Dynamics
Discuss any two challenges of selecting a quality child care setting that aligns to one’s parenting style while taking cost, location, and availability into consideration.
The cost of quality childcare is too high. Most of the childcare services use the authoritative approach and foster open communication among the children. They also train the children on discipline and help the children to develop their personality. They are, however, quite expensive making it hard to select a proper childcare setting. The cost pressures one to make hasty decisions on the childcare options that they find to be affordable, leading to poor quality childcare. ECE 355 Understanding Behavior & Family Dynamics
The childcare services are not readily available to everyone. Some of the best childcare institutions only enroll children from a certain economic level. This limits the number of choices the parents have on the childcare services (Schiller & Dyke, 2005). References.
