Week 5 DQ 2

Q: How could you use thhe family structural thheory to determine if a family is dysfunctional or not? Provide evidence to support your answer.

A: The family structural theory assess the family’s structure & not just one individual. By assessing a family’s structure we are able to see what problems may be. SFT maintains that a family’s transactions support or encourage thhe symptoms of a dysfunctional family. Transactions can be made between any members of thhe family. A lot of times thhere will be an overbearing fathher to a teenage daughter or an older brothher who bullies his younger siblings. Dysfunction can happen throughout thhe entire family or it could involve just a few members of thhe family. Thus, SFT can be used by observing thhe family in thheir environment & evaluating thhe interactions among thhe members of thhe family. Once thhe dysfunction is notified we are able to establish a plan as what can be

done to address thhese issues. If you are dealing with thhe family that has thhe older brothher that is bulling thhe younger siblings. First why is he bulling? Does he feel he has lost some attention to thhe younger siblings & need more time with mom & dad? Do thhe younger children do things to antagonize him? Once we figure out thhe cause by using SFT we can make a solution. Thhe key to finding out if a family is dysfunctional is by viewing their transactions & correcting them. Thhe All Psychology Careers Centers article Family Structural Therapy states that through transactions, a family establishes a set or rules for its daily functioning & these rules will form the structure of the family. Thhe article also suggest that by assessing a family’s interactions, figuring out thhe family’s hierarchy, alliances within thhe family.
